Workplace change is going viral as it blurs the boundaries within the system [open borders management] and between an individual at work and at home [work–life balance].
New technologies make work a "mobile commodity" which is a modern development that breaks down the boundaries between the place where work is done, the time when it is done, and the inputs to the process that gets it done. This fact has led many to suggest that a new system of "open borders management" must be invented, innovated, or created if the workplace is to maintain any semblance of cohesion. The traditional borders of managers are being removed and a new system of "one think" is being imposed on workers through HR programs that promote the likes of "diversity and inclusion" or "collaborative teams" and so on and so on. As new AI technology enables the automation of labour-intensive work processes then we will move to self-organising systems in the workplace that include models that have no HR units. A new emphasis will likely be on learning systems for human and AI workplaces including agile scrums, launch-and-learn initiatives, vocation led education, etc. The development of new schemes for the deployment of talent in the workplace will lead to organisational change on a scale not seen for the past 100 years [see photo].
New arrangements for engaging talent [gigs, outsourcing contracts, joint-venture staff, full-time employees, and the global mob] are based on the notion of "collaboration" which is modern code for "consensual teams" and "ideological unity". Decision-making [consensual commitment] is fashioned to best fit the politics of the newly formed woke workplace [HR driven rules that deploy "diversity and inclusion"]. The underlying objective is to reframe the traditional merit-based system for recruitment and promotion to introduce a political correct structure that rewards "friends of the movement" and penalises any non-woke employee [no matter his or her competence]. Perhaps the biggest change is the deliberate setting aside of individual competence in favour of "ideological harmony" which supports the new definition of the workplace as a sprawling entity that spills-over [unabated] into the home. Like those who seek to work in Hollywood in a "one-think" ideological community - many workers today must hide their ability to "think different" and to conceal their core competencies. And so most workers are being "redefined" by a workplace that is enabled to rule their lives
