Why is Australia and America in a mess?

A mess of our own making.

Australia and America have one thing in common: both are federations. However there are differences too. These differences begin with the fact that Australia is a democracy and America is a republic. But. In 2020 there is one thing that both nations have in common: both have failed in their handling of the Coronavirus pandemic. And, surprisingly perhaps, they have failed for the same reason.

Canberra is a feckless and weak centre of government; while, Washington is a network of actors that lack competence and courage. The direct result of poor levels of leadership, decision-making, and focus in Canberra and Washington is the current mess [see photo].

Why did this happen?

The answer to that question is simple. Indeed it is so simple that it is almost trite to say it. The situation here is like the one we find ourselves facing when we are confronted with a riddle which no matter how hard we try we can not solve. In many respects the handling of the Coronavirus pandemic by both Canberra and Washington is a truly baffling riddle which clearly has a simple answer.

The answer is that bureaucrats in Canberra and Washington focused steadfastly on the people not on the virus.

They talked, and talked, and talked, and talked about controlling the virus but they took decisions and calculated measures to control the people. The virus was left alone while the people were placed in quarantine. It should have been the other way around.

The result is that Australia and America are both in a mess.

Richard.
