What is strategy...

Updated: Jul 20, 2022

Strategy demands focus.

I was standing in front of an Undergraduate Class presenting the first Lecture for a new course on Strategy [see photo]. As you can see in the photo we do not have to know what it is to spell it correctly.

I stood there and I asked them to look up the various definitions for strategy themselves. For my part I propose that we spend the rest of this Semester probing this concept and see if we can come to some rational and reasonable decisions about its uses for us, our enterprises, communities, families, etc. We did that and it was fun.

Most of what poses as strategy in government, corporates, small businesses, communities, online seminars, etc is a mirage. In fact it is dangerous. What is deemed to be strategy is tactics clothed in meme-like images which conceal the lack of focus on the longer-term.

Strategy focuses on the longer-term and therefore presents a purpose and a context for the short-term. When strategy is ignored the focus is on tactical advantages that can be gained by this, or that, group within a community. In the process the first casualty is truth. Next up is transparency. Then comes accountability. And so it goes.

My strategy for life as developed on the run over the past weekend is a work-in-progress.

Here are the barebones:

SLEEP more.

EAT more oysters.

SAVOR sorbet ice creams.

IGNORE the compliant.

PAY full fare.

FIND the fun.

HONOUR workers.

SLEEP more.

EAT more oysters.

SAVOR sorbet ice creams.

Richard.
