What is progress?

What is progress for humans?

Lately I have thought some about what represents progress for humans [see photo].

For this month of September 2020 I have settled on the following description of progress: "it is a relentless race towards a world full of automated processes and human automatons".

Evidence of progress towards both outcomes is here, there, and everywhere.

The automation process is driven by technology. Activities that were normal just 100 years ago are mostly automated today. Washing clothes back in 1920 began with a hot tub and a washboard. The energy for this activity was inevitably provided by a human. Today the energy for the same activity is provided by an electricity grid; while the hot tub and the washboard have been replaced by a fully automatic washing machine. After dinner the dishes may still be piled up in a sink ready to be washed by a human as was the case in the 1920s: however, today some of those dishes are placed carefully into a fully automatic dishwasher which will render them clean. Until recent times, the act of banking was achieved once you arrived at the head of a long queue because then, and only then, could the teller respond to your instructions. Of course today all of your banking needs can be done on your smart phone or by visiting a strange contraption that is conveniently placed in a wall along main street, inside a subway entrance, or inside a shopping mall. And so it goes.

The automaton process is driven by the rigorous application of "group think". In turn modern "group think" is driven by, or linked to, the automation process. We all understand this to be true because modern technologist do not automate a process in a unique way for each and every individual on Earth. Instead these automated processes are designed to cater for specific sets of individuals who will accept the sameness of them without seeing any pressing need for change. And so what has happened to humans over the past 100 years of relentless automation presents the greatest challenge to the future of humans. It is as if a "dead switch" was suddenly flicked on inside humans brains. This switch converted the natural inclination for an individual to think, speak, and otherwise express oneself into a process which compelled a group to think, speak, and act as a homogeneous collective. At the head of the movement driving the change inside human minds are those who label themselves as "progressives". It is these so called "progressives" who have compelled human to all think, speak, and act alike. It is these well intentioned "progressives" who curated the C21st automatons that rule life on this planet today. I think such people are "regressive" not "progressive".
