Fire is something to embrace [see photo] and it is something to fear.
So many things today are on the "fear" list for people. That list is growing not shrinking. Why? Because those with a cause, an agenda, an uncontrollable rage, or an insane urge to destroy society as we know it have a huge megaphone. They shout "fire" when there is none. They shout "fire" as a warning about their "fears". They shout "fire" because they "fear" human extinction from global warming, the inequity caused by market forces, the intellectual power gained from independent thought, the benefits of law and order, and the social values embedded in Western civilisation.
Along time ago I learnt a valuable lesson about false fears. I was at home feeling sorry for myself as I nursed a serious cold. I was lying in bed when I took the call. The woman on the phone wanted my response to a series of questions on personal security. She warned me that she had a long list of questions. I needed a distraction from my misery so I agreed to go right to the end of her list. As she began her questions I was eager to let her know how "unsafe" I was given the state of crime, violence, and street rage in my community. I should add here that I lived in my own home in the most exclusive suburb of my city. And... Given that fact I was outraged at how "unsafe" I felt on a daily basis. At the end of her 90 minute interview which covered every aspect of my life I knew for sure and certain that I was "safe" on the streets but not in my mind. All I needed to do was to listen to the answers I gave to her questions to realise that I was as safe as I had ever been, or ever would be, in my life.
Fire is a great asset until it is not. Fear is a great asset until it is not.
