The real sign of workplace tyranny is the smiley face [see photo]. Everyone in a tyrannical workplace uses a smiley face to show compliance with 'group think', homogeneity, and sameness. This 'smiley face' culture is the end product of a bold narrative that employees are entitled if, and only if, they agree with the prevailing HR agenda. Those who can not stomach the HR agenda either leave or are fired [note recent history at Amazon, Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc and yet these are held to be the best workplaces around the world]. The modern HR agenda actively promotes the idea that employees are more important than customers. Why is this happening? How did this happen? First. It happens for a variety of reasons. One reason is that labour no longer drives top line revenue in global companies [Google, Facebook, etc rely on networked ads for company profits]. Second. It happens because HR is now the locus of administrative power. HR power today is sustained and maintained because it is able to cater to special interest groups across the organisation. HR drives change from the inside-out and so it is deaf to the needs of customers who seek to drive change from the outside-in. Richard
