Transition...

Transition is the point where lines of continuity meet.

We all live our life along a line of continuity where incremental changes are common but sometimes we embrace discontinuity where lumpy change is the norm [see photo].

Let me establish some concepts before proceed with this riff.

Continuity is a rut or a groove that establishes the patterns or routines of a life. These are what maybe referred to as "lines of continuity" and these are fine if the world around us is stable and prone to small tweaks of change. Go to work stacking shelves in a Supermarket and you will find the workplace is a typical example of what is referred to here as a "line of continuity".

Discontinuity is a vortex of change as measured against the existing rut, groove, or flow of life. Here change is lumpy, unexpected, novel, creative, unstable, etc. However there are "lines of discontinuity" with patterns and routines that are at some point deemed normal. Go visit an Emergence Ward in any substantial hospital and you will experience the chaos caused by "lines of discontinuity". But... If you are a doctor in that setting then this is the clear and certain pattern of workplace life for you. What is disconcerting for you is if there is a lull in the numbers of patients being wheeled in on trolleys.

Crisis is the point of transition from this to that or from here to there. In the photo above the crisis point is where the crossing meet, merge, and continue along one or another line of continuity. This is a very vulnerable point for a pedestrian because the perception of normality, safety, or simply playing by the rules becomes distorted. This is what happens to us whenever we are in transition from continuity onto discontinuity or back again.

We are all extremely vulnerable to unexpected outcomes when we live in accord with the rules we set for our current "line of continuity". However the world around us has forsaken the stable patterns which many of us have come to rely upon to proceed with a measured sense of risk for ourselves and our familial. We are being forced to transition from continuity [incremental changes to routines] to discontinuity [lumpy changes to routines]. The covid regimes are forcing a good number of us to shed our former sense of continuity and to embrace a new world of discontinuity. Wear a mask, get vaccinated, isolate yourself from others, refuse to hug your love ones, etc. The covid regimes around the world have created a discontinuity overlay to your life that has reduced your risk-taking capacity enormously.

The covid regimes ask you to "jump" and you ask them "how high?" These covid regimes have placed the world into a state of transition [the point of crisis that links discontinuity to continuity] and so it is up to each and everyone of us to establish our new lines of continuity. Some of us will grudgingly accept the covid regime dictates and live a life that includes masks, vaccines, limits on travel, an absence of human kindness and touching, etc. Others will become minimalists and live their lives based on their individual needs not on the wants of the covid regime and the mob who support them.

Whatever you decide to do with your life from this point forward you will likely be forced, by a covid regime, to proceed through a crisis of transition before you can settle down into a new line of continuity for the next few years of life.
