Newminimalists do sweat the small stuff.
Last century I recall a moment in time when I was browsing the shelves of a concession shop at JFK Airport. One small book stood out. It had a commanding title. "Don't sweat the small stuff - and it is all small stuff" by Richard Carlson. I bought it and consumed it on my flight from New York to Los Angeles and I was hooked on the message as captured by the title.
Today I advocate that we do sweat the small stuff. We need to be more in childlike in our perceptions of the world around us. And if you ever watch a child walk along a beach [see photo] you will be surprised at how many things she notices that simply escape you. Perhaps these things escape you because you have conditioned your perceptions of the world around you by the notion "don't sweat the small stuff". But. If we live our life with this notion embedded in our heads then we are missing out on so much of life that is exciting, full of energy, and worthy of closer examination.
The most innovative people I have ever met or worked with have some aspects of them that is childlike. They are direct with their communications. They have great crap detectors. They ask great questions. And. They marvel at stuff that most of us do not even see.
I have cleansed my mind of the notions that come with "don't sweat the small stuff". As a Newminimalist, I do sweat the small stuff because I only ever focus on what is important.
Richard.
