Ideology rules...

When we go through periods of "ideological rule" we get caught in a vortex of trivia. Ideology works best when it comes with a mantra that is repeated time and time again. Today the mantra is "equity". That is all about the "means" to achieve and unachievable "end".

What tends to happen in these "ideology rules" periods. Innovation slows, and eventually, dies. Social change tends to stagnate because "freedom of speech" is progressively cancelled. The most obvious example of those two results of "ideology rule" is the Soviet Union. In 1989 in Leningrad, during my visit for a conference, the impact of 70 years of "ideology rule" was here, there, and everywhere. Empty shops. Factories that produced good product for export but not for local markets. And an ever present fear of the government was clear. And so on.

Will this period of "ideology rule" last 70 years?

Richard.
