The language of a life is defined by this...

The Mandelbrot Set

The language [ie words, images, colours, sounds, textures, etc] of human life on Earth is best explained by The Mandelbrot Set. What I call "the blob" is black in the photo. The white or yellow edges are what I call "the DMZ". And the purple blue is what I call "the swirl".

Most people live inside "the blob". They are captured by the imaginary language of their lives [we loosely define this as their culture]. The blob is a pattern that repeats and repeats and repeats. Perhaps this is why human life on this planet from China to Africa to Europe to the Americas is filled with sameness not difference. The blob is a place of constraint not a place of expansion. It is a place that severely limits human mindfulness. For all of you Dr Who fans I think of "the blob" as the outside of The Tardis. It is small, it is easily described as a blue police box, and it is ordinary.

Some people live inside "the swirl" where everything is expanding just like our Universe. This space in The Mandelbrot Set is defined when the numbers are real not imaginary. I like to think of it as the "white spaces" that define Chinese characters. And again for the Dr Who fan it is the inside of The Tardis which is cavernous not cramped. The people who change our world [writers, mathematician, artists, warriors, explorers, etc] live inside "the swirl". They thrive on difference not sameness. In reality these people might as well be aliens for all they have in common with most humans who live on planet Earth.

Finally, there are a few people who strive to live on the edge of both "the blob" and "the swirl" in what I call the DMZ. Sometimes they slip over into "the blob" and sometime they tumble pell-mell into "the swirl". But most of the time they stay firmly grounded in their version of the DMZ. These are the people I call minimalists. More precisely these are individuals, both male and female, who have created their unique version of minimal-you.
