The incubator is a unique space inside an organisation or online [see photo]. It is a mind-space where the new is transparent and the obsolete is opaque.
The incubator is where a core team of colleagues and I invented a new health scheme [around 10 years ago]. This scheme ran as a subscription revenue model, a panel of hospital services, an online medical hub, and a low-cost insurance plug-in. Most of those ideas [in one form or the other] are being beta-tested in the US market today but I have yet to see the whole package. The package is a low-cost alternative to single-payer health care models. Our employer, at the time, did not take up the whole scheme but did work on parts of it. The driving force in our incubator ultimately found his career ladder in the global wine industry not healthcare.
The incubator is something that Edward De Bono talked about in various ways in his famous books on lateral thinking. Dr De Bono suggested 'that you can't dig a new hole by digging the current hole deeper'. A truism perhaps. However. It always raised this simple question in my mind - 'where do I dig the new hole'. The incubator addresses that question and then begins to delve into a whole bunch of associated issues.
