Newminimalists prepare for the impact of cancel culture on their lives.
The cancel culture will do more to shape the future workplace than technology for the next few years [you can type out the message "cancel culture" even on an analogue typewriter - see photo].
The 2020 version of cancel culture is perhaps the more powerful change influences within the workplace for the past 50 years. The reason is simple. The cancel culture is an internal, and an external, instrument for shaping change. Workers who aim to cancel language, traditions, cooperation, debate, etc. will dominate the contemporary workplace by 2022. This fact will add to your daily workload as you make time, and effort, to avoid falling into cancel culture traps. A worker can be cancelled in an instant for a comment, an attitude, a behaviour, or a mindset that offends a manager, a client, an ideology, or a staple within the prevailing "group think".
Clearly each worker must now curate practical strategies for coping with the dictates of the cancel culture within your workplace. The most successful strategy will be to join the mob. To do this you must religiously attend all their meetings and keep abreast of the types of triggers that lead to one being cancelled. This strategy will work for you even if you trip up because you will be considered to be "one of them". However. You must be prepared to do a huge amount of "unpaid work" if you are to keep up with the moving focus of the cancel culture. An alternative strategy is to leave this workplace and build one for yourself that is not a "cancel culture". But. This will become an increasingly difficult strategy to execute because your clients, customers, and supporters will be under pressure to cancel ties with you for social justice, race, gender, or a whole range of ideological or theological reasons.
Let me be clear here. The "cancel culture" is nothing new in workplaces. For decades past it has been Human Resources staff who have enforced the "code" that cancelled workers from the promotion train, advanced training opportunities, and imposed an opaque limit on all individuals freedoms. What is different, perhaps, is that this time the cancel culture is a political movement that has its roots outside the workplace. The basic aim of this movement is to cancel many prominent aspects of Western Culture and civility. For example they seek to cancel advancement of workers based on merit or rational performance criteria. They seek to create a workplace where "equal outcomes" can be achieved. They seek to promote the interest of minorities, above all others, in the workplace. And so on....
The cancel culture is here and it is expanding its reach.
