The American dystopia....

Newminimalists are prepared for harder and harder times.

More space than activity demands.

The science fiction versions of dystopia are dark and full of menace. However. The American dystopia of 2020 is full of empty spaces [see photo] and unpredictable flare-ups of violence. These flares-ups of violence attract the media attention but these images are not recording the underlying dystopia. The glimpses we get of the 2020 American dystopia is also blurred by the media coverage of the Coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying shutdown of the real economy. Meanwhile the real images of the 2020 American dystopia are those that highlight the growing menace of homelessness in Los Angeles and San Francisco. These are the people that their society has put on the scrap heap.

But. The real American dystopia is seen in the zombie shopping malls around the nation. These are empty spaces that were once filled with crowds of shoppers. And even those malls that are still open and have a constant flow of shopper there is space that is boarded-up with promises of new owners coming soon. Alternatively these spaces have been subjected to a reuse mantra that see them accommodating shoppers who are just hanging around, sitting, or waiting to meet-up with friends. These malls are recording the continual decline of the 1950s urban economy which was sustained by an affluent middle class who lived off one wage and had secure employment.

The underlying cause of distress in the American economy today is that there are too many businesses, both large and small, run on extremely low margins. Both entities survived on their cashflow not their profitability. However. These businesses were not innovating. These businesses were sold and bought but they stayed the same. And this syndrome was clear if one looked at a new small business that introduced new use value to fast food, convenience shopping, health drinks, and supplements because these quickly became regional or national chains. The reason these businesses grew was that they had better profit margins than any competitor in their industry.

Where are the new use value businesses opportunities in this dystopian economy. One that is now a standout opportunity is in the areas of personal, home, and business security. The new entrepreneurs will use AI systems and robots to provide these services. One truly obvious opportunity is to provide security bots in areas where the local police force is being defunded or dismantled. Some business people are going to make a fortune in these areas as they sell a former public good to private customers.

Life is about to get very interesting for those who are willing to create new businesses at the local, national, and global levels.
