Newminimalists are intensely tethered to the present.
The great thing about being a Newminimalist is that my life is strongly tethered to the present. My debt [credit] card is a great example of how being.tethered to the present works for me [see photo]. My bank account is an accumulation of past deposits. It is accessed in the present. And it a constraint on the future.
How this works in practice for me is simple. If I travel to another currency system I lock into it immediately. I begin to think about transactions in terms of the currency I am in not the currency I left behind yesterday, last week, last year, etc. That is not easy to do [honestly I still struggle to do it]. Most of the time I am keen to convert everything back into the currency at home. Like most people, I guess, this means I have a very strong tether to the past and that why I think in terms of the old currency not the one I am enveloped by. And this means I have a fleeting focus on what the future purchasing power of the currency, I am using right now, might possess in a year or so.
It strikes me that wants live in the future and are clarified by the lack of satiated wishes and dreams in the past. This tends to mean that individuals who focus on wants are being propelled by the disappointments of the past and in the hope of a better future. Thus these individuals are tightly tethered to the past, loosely tethered to the present, and randomly tethered to the future based on a favoured set of long-term wants. In stark contrast, any individual who is strongly focused on needs is intensely tethered to the present.
If you are strongly tethered to the world of 2019 then you are travelling through 2020 much as a tourist does who is always thinking in terms of home currency while being exposed to a wide variety of different currencies.
As a Newminimalist, I travel through 2020 as a participant tourist who uses the currency of the moment. I travel light because I have stripped away the excess baggage of past personal wants and future collective wants. This way of being in the world is sometimes a struggle for me; but, it is becoming a disciplined life style that I am sure will enable me to live in the moment no matter what the future may bring.
