Strategy is more important than ever in 2022 because the world is broken [see photo].
Most people live their lives relying on their wits. They are tactical not strategic. Tactical when considering their options with career, family, education, beliefs, etc. And this means they "muddle through their life". Of course this is not a bad way to live right up until the moment that the world breaks. And 2022 is such a moment.
I stood in the auditorium looking out from the lectern at my post-graduate class with the heading STRATEGY spelled out on the big board. "I do not know how to define it... I am sorry... but I know that it has something to do with the future and thus it must be vibrant or dynamic or something like that". There was some laughter in the house that day. And sad to say that at the end of the course, many weeks later, I had made no ground on presenting a viable definition for a key element of public policy formulation [the mission of that course]. If I was standing there today perhaps I might say "STRATEGY is all about CONTEXT". In a public policy sense it the context that is usually forgotten as the strategists are urged by their masters to "do something". When they respond to that call they become tacticians.
The best STRATEGY I know is " to hit 'em where they ain't". If you do that then it is clear that you understand the meaning of CONTEXT. Most strategist have no idea where "they" are let alone where "they" are not. To drill down a little into that idea let us conduct a thought experiment. On a battlefield all the tactical information will doubtless indicate were the enemy has its strongest positions. That is where you should hit them given this strategy because that is where they will least expect you to strike. You will take them by complete surprise. And this is viable strategy because you understand the context that you face.
If you study the contexts of this broken world we live in today then you will likely come up with the best strategy for you to survive and thrive.
Richard.
