Power-clusters...

The new workspace is distributed.

The 2021 workspace - both physical and virtual - is a distributed entity [see photo]. And the direct consequence of this development is the removal of the old power hierarchies. This development might remove the command-and-control power allocated by title [status] or authority [legal fiat] or proprietary rights [ownership], etc. which can be a good thing.

To begin to assess this modern development I propose that you look around the workspace you use to earn a living. Likely it is not a hierarchy but a self-organising network of some description. Likely it is a distributed network of power-clusters and if this is the case it needs closer investigation by you, and perhaps by your colleagues, because these clusters now rule your work life. Likely you are part of a power-cluster that you simply joined in an attempt "to go along to get along" which means you ceded most decision-making power to your peers. Likely you are not a leader inside your power-cluster because you are not an ideologue who is committed to changing all the rules that govern your workspace and by extension those controlling your society. Likely you do not agree with the decisions being made by the power-cluster and this means you are not a viable candidate for promotion. Likely you are cannon fodder for a power-cluster that aims to exert influence here, there, and everywhere.

Here are some questions to help you determine who you are and what your prospects are as an employee who is under the control of one, or more, of these power-clusters.

Have you been denied a bonus that all your colleagues were automatically granted?

Have you been fired from a job recently for social, not explicitly performance, related issues?

Have you found it difficult to perform your tasks without being the butt of a recurring joke?

Have you been excluded from social drinks, and get-togethers, organised by colleagues?

Have you been "silenced" on conference calls or ignored in onsite meetings?

Have you received poor reviews and refused promotions when others have not?

Have you been discriminated against when it comes to receiving tech upgrades, etc?

Have you ever finished a work shift thinking I did a great job today?

Have you accepted the fact that the work is not a top priority inside your power-cluster?

Have you ever felt that you should simply down-tools and leave this all behind?

Richard.
