Modern politics is hexed...

Running backwards into the future.

The hex on modern politics is "ideology". This contemporary feature of politics is why we often seem to be running backwards into our future [see photo].

Once upon a time, I worked as an adviser to politicians and back then the art of politics was to curate "coalitions of interest". These coalitions centred around issues that often sped across Party lines. The secret was to focus on the issues until a fledgeling coalition could take shape. These fledgeling bodies came with the "trust" needed for protracted bargaining sessions on solutions to the core issues. And the ultimate solution was a compromise.

Today's hex on politics [and politicians] destroys trust and compromise. This modern day curse is embedded deeply into what might best be described as ideology based "coalitions on interest". Within such coalitions there is no wiggle room to spark a compromise. There is no trust between the ideologues and their rivals. Thus there is room for any deviation from the narrative which defines the issue when the solutions are paraded as "a way forward".

An example of this hex in action goes like this - Climate Change is now an ideological issue. Any attempt to discuss this issue in terms that stray outside the designated script will lead to some form of "cancellation". This "cancel culture" mechanism is used to ensure that any discourse is conducted in words, thoughts, actions, and beliefs that tightly comply with the embedded ideological message. Therefore any ideological solution to Climate Change is restricted to notion that only renewable energy will suffice. And the "cancel culture" lever is pulled whenever there is talk about fossil fuels, nuclear power, etc.

This curse will eventually be lifted and we can once again move forward with "coalitions of interest" that produce compromise and innovative solutions to our political problems.
