Merit-based workplaces are rare today...

Individual workstations belong to the collective.

Those who are an integral part of "the collective" have swamped the modern workplace [see photo]. To be competent, outspoken, and imaginative was applauded and rewarded inside the old merit-based workplaces but today these employees are pariahs.

If you do not understand why "dumb decisions" are taken each and every day in your workplace then you are a pariah. The memo you missed or did not get said "you must go along to get along". You must sit on your hands. You must not [no never] rock the boat with your contrarian suggestions or rational decision-making processes. You must accept the promotion to top level positions of some of the most incompetent, arrogant, and mendacious individuals you have ever worked alongside. These folks are thriving under the new HR religion of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The good news is that modern technology is coming to your rescue. Many of the workplace processes are being automated. And this means that these new entities are starved of customer empathy, process innovation, and high quality human resources. If you thrived within a merit-based workplace then the future will afford you many opportunities to use your skills and to improve your individual performances.
