Masks...

Masks

To wear - or not to wear - a mask [see photo]: that is the question.

On the weekend I wore a mask on public transport as mandated by the authorities [here in Prague]. I wore it because it makes some sense to do so when people are forced to travel in close proximity. Mind you I believe that masks are useless. However, many people believe in them: so it is a common courtesy for me to follow this ritual. And yet... I suspect this mask wearing habit is becoming more than a ritual for those who support all the actions that are taken for The Greater Good [see the funny movie Hot Fuzz for clarification].

In the shopping mall I tried a little experiment. I removed my mask as a personal choice and in solidarity with the barefaced person I was with. Of course I was deliberately defying the Government mandate that enforces this method of claustrophobic breathing for everyone. I stood there bare faced for about ten minutes before a slightly diffident young man - dressed in a security uniform - approached me and gestured to me to put on a mask on. I said - in English - that I have been fully vaccinated. I am not sure if he understood my protest or not. But I took the opportunity to produce my vaccine certificate as proof of what I was saying. My point being that I have had the jab and thus do not need the mask to protect myself or others from the Covid. He simply walked away. Meanwhile the people around me did not seem to notice my bare face as they hide securely behind their masks.

While inside a tram, on the same trip, I saw a man rush to join us with two kids. He dropped three masks on the ground as he made his moves. Once on the tram he proceeded to place these soiled masks on himself and the kids. I conclude from this event, and many others, that mask wearing is related to compliance, fear of others, or some sense of The Greater Good: it is not about healthcare. For instance I laugh when I see people wearing masks while they jog in a park. I see crack a smile when I see mask wearing in a street where there are precious few others present. I perceive all this as a worrisome development in an era when corporates and governments are collaborating to create a new type of Fascism.

Do you wear a mask at times when it is not mandated by authorities? Do you welcome the rise and rise of a new type of democratic Fascism? Do you accept the narrative that carries the theme of "The Greater Good" as is now being propagated by media, governments, and corporations? Do you have any real sense of yourself as an independent individual?

Richard.
