Management by tribal consent...

How does this workplace operate in practice?

Cool workplace architecture is common. The sketches look great [see photo].

What remains invisible is that "real change" is happening in modern workplaces. The real change has accompanied the emergence of "workplace tribes". However these tribes remain hidden because they live and thrive inside workers` heads. Of course these tribes are highly manageable [for the moment] because they are based on an ideology [diversity and inclusion], a theology [carbon-free living], or a centralised regime [command-and-control mantras].

A time is coming when "management by tribal consent" will not hold. But for the moment some great examples of "tribal consent" can be seen in workplaces at Google, Facebook, Twitter, VaynerMedia, San Francisco Council, City of London financial hub, EU Bureaucracy, World Bank, US Federal Reserve, etc.

The coming challenge for "management by tribal consent" is that AI is invading these workplaces and these robots will soon become an integral part of creation, production, and delivery of products and services [beginning at Amazon]. The tribes will fragment and will become less amenable to rule by "one-think" management strategies.

Individuals who "think different" will be hired to augment the robots and these folks will become a huge challenge for future management. First, they will earn more than their managers. Second, they will walk-out of any workplace that is toxic. Third, they will ignore the command-and-control model of management.
