Newminimalists tend to make their dreams real.
Most people are unable to separate their dream from what is real [see photo]. Most dreams float like a butterfly but can not sting like a bee. In my experience, it is your ability to sting like a bee that keeps your life real.
I wondered why the Space Shuttle was a box. No one expected the Shuttle to look more like a box than a dove. Everything in nature that flies from a butterfly to a bee is designed for the task of flying. I remember sitting in the Library at the Johnson Space Center looking at artists impressions and engineering designs for the Shuttle. None of these looked anything like the box that finally became the world's first sub-orbital transporter.
So what was the sting in the tail that changed the NASA engineers dreams of creating a butterfly into plans to build a box. It was the solution to the issue of re-entry. Remember the shuttle was a re-usable space craft whereas men went to the moon in a disposable capsule. The talent at NASA labs had to solve this issue. They solve it by producing a flat white tile. I remember having one heated to a temperature that would ordinarily burn straight through me lying on my right hand. Amazingly I still have that hand as I type this riff. I felt little of the heat it had absorbed. This tile dissipated heat so quickly and this fact kept my hand safe.
If you have a flat white tile that must cover the shuttle then it becomes a box or something like that because you need flat surfaces to stick these suckers on to. Indeed we often saw a shuttle return to Earth with a few of these tiles missing because they did not stay stuck to the surface of this flying box.
The Space Shuttle was in so many ways the most ugly flying machine ever built. And there are many more stories I can tell you about why that is so. But. Perhaps the pivotal reason is that the engineers had a flat tile solution to the heat dissipation problem. This breakthrough meant that this spacecraft was never going look like any pictures drawn by the dreamers.
My message to you is simple. Dream of a butterfly but build a box if that is what works best.
Richard
