Living by principle not precedence...

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

Newminimalists establish new precedents based on three core principles.

Design, form, and spirit.

The great thing about becoming a Newminimalist [at this point in world history] is that one's life is guided by principles not precedent. For a Newminimalist there are three principles: thoughts based on needs not wants; habits based on needs; and beliefs based on those thoughts and habits.

When you finally escape from your particular version of the coronavirus pandemic your natural impulse will be to lean on precedence as an anchor for your life in the face of unprecedented complexity. The nature of complexity is that one can not see all of it because it tends to overwhelm all of one senses in one fell swoop. Life is suddenly floating before one's eyes and it requires a tether to keep it grounded. Precedence is perfect for this task.

However. Newminimalists are prepared to meet complexity in the whole and in the particular. For them complexity is reduced to thoughts, habits, and beliefs. And these three core elements of life are based on first principles that honour needs not wants. When facing periods of uncertainty, ambiguity, and confusion the Newminimalist knows that complexity comes with patterns defined by lines and spaces so they know to expand into the spaces and reduce when they confronted with a line. He or she becomes a person and a shadow. The person expands and the shadow reduces as, and when, required to survive and thrive.
