James Taylor songwriter and performer had a mind that was both his friend and his enemy. His friendly mind helped him to portray his longing for home, family, and his dog in a classic song. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx_LHSrjsCg
However within the Taylor mind lurked demons which taunted him in his early life. Most notably he succumbed to the addiction he developed for heroine [plus alcohol abuse] in the last year of this marriage to Carly Simon. On the outside the world celebrated this couple as the most envied at the time with good looks, lifestyle, two wonderful kids, and a level of fame not yet common for folk/rock performers. However this marriage had become toxic and so the separation was the equal of mortal combat. And yet, mere months after the split James was drug free and would remain that way.
But .... James Taylor had a mind that was never far from tragedy. He revelled in a sweet romance with a woman before he left for London. Turns out this woman had parents who sought a tight control over her life [which was not a necessary according to James] so they had her committed to a sanitarium where she suicided. James was shielded from news of these events until after the fact. He responded with his friendly mind. He wrote this classic song in three stages but the first verse came straight from his heart. In my mind.....
