Hot air balloons and wind turbines...

What a great photo for the conversation I want to start here. The context for this content [see photo] is old and new technologies. I just love this photo. In many ways this photo is a symbol of our times.

The old technology is the hot air balloon. It is impractical, inefficient, dangerous, and yet lots of fun for those who like to fly. The new technology is the wind turbine. It is impractical, inefficient, dangerous, and yet an icon for the green energy movement around the globe.

But let me shift this riff to the current technology subject that has come to fascinate me. That is the existing role of labour and the emerging role of AI. The pace for integration of AI technologies into all aspects of the global economy is staggering. Meanwhile the current conversations about the role of AI in local, national, and global product and service delivery remains laced with wild speculation and exaggeration.

I do not know what the future of AI processing capabilities might prove to be by 2050 and beyond; however, it seems to be prudent to plan for the impact of AI with more than a nod to it. If AI processing is to become the staple component in virtual and tangible business entities then we need to dramatically alter our thinking about current organisational trends. For example, I advocate that most global businesses create an AI centre that works like the original concept of HR did all those years ago when it was called "personnel".

The centre would be charged with in-sourcing or out-sourcing the development of applications for the whole business. The centre would keep track of patents. The centre would keep track of the effectiveness of all these applications. The centre would embed these applications into the marketing narratives of the business. The centre would cooperate with a fading HR entity to ensure the smooth transformation of a corporate culture from a people-centric to an AI-centric mode. And so on.

AI is a new technology that is about to rule our work, home, holiday, and study time. It is not like the technologies of the past - the air balloon and the wind turbine - that were visible to the naked eye. In most instances AI technology will remain opaque to the user and so it will bring new challenges to us all.
