The idea of a Political Union for Europe was pushed in Prague this week. Macron was leading the charge. This is a concept that Macron has had in some form or other for at least the past five years. But this is the first time that any of his colleagues inside the EU have shown any real appetite for this new form of governance.
The piece that still sits ajar in the Macron Plan is the notion of a European military force. This might work if it is not a "standing army" but a cooperative force drawn from the members of this new political union. I imagine they would conduct regular military exercises to ensure that a unified fighting force could be mounted if required within the European war theater.
This would not be a monetary union like the EU. And there is lies the entropy that will finally end the EU as these nation states reinstate their own currencies along with their new military forces.
This new political union could be a huge asset for Britain if they used to problem solve. For example this cooperative organisation could fix the flood of illegal migrants into and throughout Europe. It could also lead to the disbanding of NATO. It could also lead to expulsion of American military forces inside Europe and a lowering of the US influence in European public affairs.
This political union could gain a "first movers advantage" in a host of new organisational innovations that will spread through both public and private institutions as we proceed through C21st. I believe that all of us should welcome these initiatives as they filter through our own workplaces and in the way we live our lives from 2022 onwards.
