Has boredom become a pandemic?

Boredom is a state of mind not an act of behaviour.

Perhaps my view of boredom is a little different to most of you. I advocate teaching children how to become bored for extended periods without becoming sad [see photo]. Because most of us were never taught how best to handle boredom I think the world has tumbled into an unexpected pandemic. More and more people of all ages are being infected by the virus I call "boredom".

Boredom is generated in humans because they have inflated wants. Inflated wants are imported not homegrown. Inflated wants can be simple, complex, generous, or greedy. Inflated wants are expansive. Inflated wants spike when one joins a Clique who share one's values, morals, world view, fascination with money, etc. Inflated wants can not be satiated. Inflated wants lead one to boredom.

Boredom is a virus that can not thrive in a mind that is focused on needs not wants. Needs do not inflate they expand, stabilise, or contract. Needs are generally homegrown. Needs are grounded by actions. Needs are framed by context not content. Needs influence habits. Needs frame beliefs. Needs can be worked on even when a person is bored.

Boredom is spreading fast. Perhaps because most of one's life is repetitive. The real issue of boredom may be captured by a simple set of questions. How do you deal with repetition? Do your social media rituals relieve the boredom of repetition in your life? Are you less bored these days because you are now on TikTok rather than Instagram? Do you lapse into periods of boredom when the Twitter feed repeats the pro and cons you feel about an issue but offers no viable solution? Are you inherently bored because your "inner voice" is on a repetitive loop day after day after day? Are you less, or more, bored today than yesterday?

Good luck dealing with your current levels of boredom. Remember we are all bored during periods of any day, however, that is not the real issue. The real issue is how you deal with the boredom virus that is challenging your current state of mind.
