My sense of "freedom" today is that it can become a delusion [see photo]
So...... 'what is a good definition of individual freedom?'
Here is what I have thus far. It is not a word, a phrase, or a statement - it is a story.
"You are trapped inside a pod, on an interstellar transporter, headed for the icy-blue planet Mars. Here you can eat, sleep, and entertain yourself as you wish. Your primitive ablution amenities are novel but all the other facilities are luxurious. As you curl yourself into a human ball you berate yourself with one question – 'what made me do this?'
Your best guess as to why you volunteered to go to Mars is it is your response to a dare. You heard about this opportunity to go where so few humans have gone before and it re-ignited a dormant flame inside you. It made you look again at what you had done since graduating as part of the Stanford University's Class of 2095. A quick backward glance suggests that everything in your life is hollow and you seem to lack a defining purpose.
You were always a person with a purpose. You believed in living a purpose-driven life. But without a hint of a warning the things you did, day-after-day-after-day, made little sense. Sure you love working with under-privileged children but you need a bigger challenge. So you dared yourself to go to Mars. The contract you signed has a 'get out free' clause. At some unspecified future time you can return to Earth if you can not cope with life on Mars. When you signed this document you remember gritting your teeth as your mind struggled to keep up with a cacophony of thoughts. In that instant you vowed that you will never return to mother Earth. You will become 'Martian'.
You are wrapped in a pod heading out into Open Space. You are making the best of the time you have with a solid program of self-education. You imagine yourself to be growing fat on knowledge, know-how, and knowing. “Will any of this stuff be useful on the icy-blue planet Mars?”
Some learnings are Mars specific but most of it aims to broaden your mind. You know you will need to be much more accepting of difference than you have ever been before. Your great strength has always been your ability to codify what you know to suit your purpose. But now you have to open your mind to possibilities that most women of your age, and background, could not even imagine.
You are 29 years old. You are single. You plan to have babies. You will soon be a citizen of Mars. It is an uncluttered profile. There is no past in this picture. There is no future in this picture. There is you, this pod, and your dare to yourself.
You dared yourself to be free."
