Follow the money....

Newminimalists promote individual needs not collective wants.

Money is information even in the form of Roman Coins

Many years ago I was following an international investigation of "organised crime". I was absolutely fascinated by the topic because I have always been - including today - a student of organisation theory. As I read the details of this investigation there were three words that kept ringing in my ears "follow the money". Hearing those three words changed my life. Suddenly, I understood the essence of all the organisations I had ever been part of in the past or would ever become a part of in the future.

Money is like water it finds ingenious ways to create a stream, a river, and even an ocean. Money is like water because it leaves a trail that can be "mapped" through all the nooks and crannies of the prevailing landscape. Money is like water in the sense that it makes deserts bloom or tropical forests impenetrable with undergrowth and that is what happens inside organisations when the funds flow. So I decided to create my own explanation of how money works inside business, non-government, government, political, education, and community organisations [I have worked in some form of all those types of organisations]. I came up with what I call "the revenue model".

Whenever I have been confronted with a complex problem by a student, or a client, I have them describe the current "revenue model" that lies behind the presenting issues. It still amazes me how few of these people were, or are, able to describe "the revenue model" that rules their lives at work and at home. And yet the answer to so many problems in the world today is offered by those who create innovative revenue models for existing or start-up enterprises.

Where does your money flow? Can you change that flow? What new money flows do you need to achieve your most cherished dreams. Can you imagine a life where you have less money but more freedom, happiness, and success?

Five years ago, I imagined a new life for myself. I left my nation of birth and all the money traps that entangled me there including all the trappings of that life. I got on a plane with less money than I had had since I was a thirty-year old. A few clothes, an old photo of my mum and dad, a passport, a toothbrush, and [of course] my chips from the Berlin Wall I pounded off it as it came down in 1989. As my friend walked me to the gate at the Melbourne Airport he wished me "good luck" in my new life. On the plane I reflected on the notion of needing some "good luck" in the future and I imagined that I was well placed to attract it. I was free. I was happy. I was [finally] a success.
