The post-2020 context is a contest between invention and innovation. Invention creates enormous amounts of wealth, employment, and progress [see photo]. Innovation slashes costs, reduces employment, and stalls momentum.
The upcoming context for life after 2020 is a contest between continuity [incremental change through innovation] and discontinuity [disruptive change through invention-led change]. An example of innovative change is Uber or Airbnb because these initiative reduce costs in the short-term [however when legislation catches up with these innovative ventures then much of the early benefits fade away]. An example of invention-led change is Google or Facebook because these initiative ventures create new wealth, power centres, and social progress [however when new legislative measures are passed they tend to incorporate even these inventions into what is commonly known as "the new normal"].
Which side of the equation do you choose to work on?
Most likely you are and will continue to work on the innovation side; but, that may change after 2020 as more and more opportunities appear for those who focus on invention. The prerequisite for a mind that focuses on inventions must embraces discontinuity, uncertainty, ambiguity, and long-term evolution.
