Over the past decade I have become fascinated by "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". Why? There are many reasons for my new obsession; but, perhaps, they all come down to the lack of "fantasy" on Earth in 2023.
Fantasy is the opposite of groupthink. Fantasy is based in imagination. Group think is based in sameness. And it is the curse of "sameness" that I believe must eventually be overcome in the latter part of this Century.
Fantasy is messiness. Sameness is orderliness. Wonderland is the epitome of messiness. Alice Little, the role model for the fictional character who strolls through Wonderland, is little miss tidy. Alice goes into Wonderland, whether through a dream or a dream-like trance, and tries to clean up the messiness she finds. She uses language to bring order. She uses anger to impose order. She uses single-mindedness to deny the orderliness of Wonderland.
Alice Little would be elected unopposed as the ruler of our C21st world. Why? Because she enters a fantasy world of abundance, creativity, complexity, etc and fails to embrace the experience. Instead she contest the messiness she finds because it is not hers. She sees others' messiness as something to be put right. She experiences Wonderland as a chore not as a once in a lifetime extravaganza. She is quick to debate the sound, nature, and definition of words used in a place where the ridiculous is the norm. She fails on every level to embrace the ongoing fantasy that is ever present in Wonderland.
I sense we need more people to embrace the fantasy of our planet. Earth is the Wonderland of our known Universe. When we create settlements on Mars, and go exploring into Deep Space, we will need humans, and Super AI-bots, to bring their best levels of imagination, fantasy, and messiness. These humans, and living Super AI bots, will be the first on the shuttle to Mars. Why? Because they will be desperate to leave the current burden of sameness behind them. They will be free at last. They are free because they are no longer human. They are free because they are Martians. They are free because they live in the fantasy worlds they discover in Deep Space.
