Empathy vs Competence

A dentist who is empathetic to my pain is less useful than one who is competent [see photo]. I prefer a pilot who is competent to one who is empathetic. We all know and appreciate this fact of life - so why do I raise it here? Empathy is promoted as Western Society fragments into collectives, Cliques, and tribes. Within businesses, public services, charities, politics, etc empathy is spoken about much more than competence. Why? When "group think" prevails within a workplace it is supported by empathy not by competence. And "group think" is the common cause being pushed by HR around the globe today. The HR cause is "diversity and inclusion" and the new practice is to promote women above men, minorities above majorities, and empathy above competence. However. Competence is coming to your workplace. Competence will replace Empathy. AI will automate people-based processes and deliver levels of competence not experienced before. Empathy among AI bots will be nil. Empathy among humans put on the "scrap heap" will reach an historical peak. Experience with change [over three decades] has taught me that the "outgoing system" expands to reach a zenith just before it implodes. AI competence is coming.... Richard
