Efficiency, effectiveness, and X-efficiency

YOU might be in the WRONG workplace.

There is a simple mistake being made by workers around the globe [see photo].

Let's look at what is wrong with the choices many workers make in their careers. What I am about to share with you is based on my personal experiences in many different workplaces around the world over several decades.

Some workplaces rely on their workers being efficient. Which means the workers are good at performing those processes that produce an efficient system such as "just-in-time" supply chains, etc. Are you a good fit for a workplace where what you do is repetitive and depends upon your abilities to pay very close attention to minute details? For example those who work in the back office of legal firms as paralegals or in those conveyancing offices for real estate transactions, etc. The good news is if you fit with the needs of a system that requires workers to be efficient you will thrive. The bad news is many of you are currently trapped in a system that needs workers who are effective.

Some workplaces rely upon their workers being effective. That means these workers are good at producing desirable results or outcomes such as with sales teams. Are you a good fit for a workplace where what you must do is innovative, not repeatable, and risk taking? For example those who work directly with customers not with home office employees. These workers often form their strongest social ties with customers and therefore they establish a set of "sentience boundaries" with outsiders not insiders. The good news is if you fit the needs of a system that requires workers to be effective you will thrive. The bad news is many of you are currently trapped in a system that needs workers who are efficient.

All workplaces find it difficult to get the best from workers who are both efficient and effective at work. These folks are rare in the general population but they are more scarce in most workplaces. Managers and work colleagues have difficulty dealing with these assets because they are natural risk takers, likely to renounce "group think", and can act in some anti-social ways. Are you one of these X-efficiency workers? If you so then you will likely become a contractor, a gig worker, or find independent-work opportunities. The good news is there are likely to be more, and more, opportunities around the globe for your skills.
