Working in politics was exhausting for me because there was no safe place for anyone who actively pursue expansive ideas. The notion that politics is a forum for ideas, ideologies, etc is a narrative not a reality. The reality is that partisan politics is the tool that the elite use to maintain the status quo. The storyline is that politics is a battle of ideas; but, the truth is that partisan ideologies infuses real drama into a process designed to maintain the status quo.
I was in a room with around thirty other advisors discussing the timing of an election. I was adding the spice to the discussion that had a clear and certain narrative. Indeed, I was the only one who brought energy, surprise, and purpose to the discussion [see photo].
"Richard we all want an election on 10th December because we have the best chance of winning on that date. Do you think that some date in March is more certain to bring us success?"
"Of course I can not assure you that March is as certain of a victory as December seems to be. However, I know that it is a much better date for the agenda of the Government as outlined in the Budget documents. If we have a Christmas election then the thrust of that Budget strategy is neutered because consumer spending will be way down. Also the promises prompted by this election will shatter the discipline required to hold the line on public policy as outlined in the Budget. This means we will have to start all over again to assert the processes, and means, we need to deliver what we promised the electorate at the last election. We are here to govern for the people, no?"
"No... We are here to gain, and then to exercise, power. Politics is all about power. You have not learnt anything over the past three years, Richard, because you still believe that we are here for the people. I am shocked by what you are saying here today. Are you just stirring the pot? Please remember we must establish a consensus in this meeting. We certainly do not need a dissenting voice like yours. Are you intending to blow-up our consensus. Why are you doing this to us?"
And so it went for several hours. We did have an election on the 10th December: but, the only voice that the boss took any notice of was the one that urged him to delay the election until March. I am told that it was a close call when his final decision was made.
I learnt that day that a life without drama is not the one I seek to live.
Richard.
