Today there is so much hype around about the next workplace, digital transformation of work, globalisation of workers and workplaces, etc. But so much of that content is produced merely to titillate and entertain us while we slog through another boring day at work.
Day one at your new job is a critical time for you. It is the time when you get to assess what is actually going on around this workplace. Notice first whether this workplace is being driven by the system or by the people [see photo]. If it is driven by the system then all change is "top town". If it is driven by "the people" then all change is "bottom up". It is important that you know where the future stimulus for change is coming from so that you can hone your skills to fit the emerging culture of this particular workplace.
For example, if the drivers of change are inside the system then you need skills that enable you to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of all current and future algorithms. If you have skills or work practices that fit the desired outcomes of the system then you will be rewarded [promotion, bonuses, training opportunities, etc]. However, if the drivers of change are the people then you must hone your skills in communication, empathy, group think, etc to ensure that you become a valued member of the Clique. When a Clique is in charge you must soak up the ideology, language, habits, etc of those around you; or, you will be deemed to be a troublemaker and a rebel. Sure you might choose to be a rebel but if you do make that choice then begin your search for a new job.
