This photo is a great example of content without context. The content presented here is charming yet extremely shallow. Shallow content is all around us today. Most of it is paper thin, boring, meaningless, hyped, etc.
Perhaps the existence of shallow content is the reason that "story telling" has become a prized asset. Story telling acts as a distraction. Story telling is a drug that puts an audience online, or at a physical event, into a temporary trance. One could offer you a meaningful story to accompany this photo. For instance, this photo is all about two fictional people whose names are the only real feature of this content. A good story teller will capture the audience with a romantic tale about two lovers who struggle to be together.
Context is a narrative. For example this photo is a demonstration of a fad that has spread around the world. People like to capture a moment of love, or togetherness, with a lock not just a series of photos. The act of securing a padlock is perhaps a moment of true happiness in the lives of two people. Twelve months later when their love dies they sustain no interest in the padlock. So one narrative that provides context for this photo is not the act of two people but the fact that hundreds, thousands, or perhaps millions of couples around the globe use padlocks to signal a moment of togetherness. When you have the context for this photo it makes sense. But most content online today is devoid of context.
One example of popular content is a profile. Most profiles are so shallow that the actual content qualifies as noise. The missing link for a personal profile is context. For example a person claims to be a scientist. What does that mean? Equally a person claims to be a life coach. What does that mean? Most of the bio content presented to the world today is either shallow or meaningless. Why? Because the words used to describe a person lack context.
Context explains content. Context relies upon a narrative that is grounded in purpose. What is the purpose behind the act of placing a padlock on a bridge with two names engraved on it? One can speculate about why someone did this. But the fact of the matter is that one has no real insights into this act unless or until a context is place around it. For instance, one possible context for this photo is it is a commercial for a photographer. He or she got a padlock, engraved two romantic names on it, and then put it on a bridge to create a photo opportunity.
