Newminimalists welcome complexity.
Humans have difficult when dealing with complexity [see photo]. As individuals and groups we have a range of mind-numbingly simple strategies and tactics we use to identify the patterns inside complex events [mobs burning down a city], movements [Mao's Red Guards fermenting a cultural revolution], stories [the "Emperor has no clothes on" is an illusion or delusion revealed by the innocent mind of a child], and so on.....
Complexity is the result of positive, and negative, externalities that are embedded within the tension between competing forces [global and local entities]. Mao magnified the complexity within China and then exploited the fact that most citizens are overwhelmed by any natural or man-made environment that has no recognisable pattern to it. It does have a pattern but the individual who is caught up in it can not easily see it; and so a rational response to complexity by an individual is uncommon. Often this response is because the individual has no buffer to shield him or her from a complex event [shop owners whose business is burnt down are not fully covered for their loss by any insurance policy or other precautions they took]. Often the individual tries to breakdown the complexity he or she faces [rioters who are intent on destruction] into simple explanations [the rioters have cause due to the social injustice of the system they are burning down]. Often the individuals can no longer recognise patterns within the chaos that engulfs them they become disorientated and make bad decisions and poor choices.
When faced with chaos those who accept that complexity has discernible patterns embedded within it are best able to survive and thrive [for example, Newminimalists]. The secret of the Newminimalist is that he or she is agile of mind. He or she is flexible with habits. And he or she is willing to re-examine fundamental beliefs.
