Brainpower has become the secret sauce of human existence [see photo]. But never in my life have I see less brainpower being used than in 2021. The absence of brainpower is obvious to anyone who is not living under a rock or being mentally tortured by their Clique.
The day I began to believe in brainpower is one I will never ever forget although I can hardly claim to remember it. I was playing rugby union out on the right wing [I was there because my team mates believed that I had "more toe than a roman sandal" - do you know what that means... ha, ha, ha]. Anyhow... Inside the first minute of the game I was laid out like a new rug on wooden floor. I recall that I received some "magic water" from the trainer while sitting on the grass in a dazed condition. He also passed on a message from the coach "go into the forwards". I did so because I was in no condition to argue.
The rest of the game is a blur even though I recall watching the whole thing as it happened from a comfortable seat in an outdoor movie theatre. The screen was huge and so I saw every tackle, bump, gap, and all my efforts to score tries myself [three for the match] or to offload to others who went in to score [three for team mates]. At the end of it all I was the king of the castle or as they put it "man of the match". Strangely... I did not feel like a King nor like a Star. I felt like I had been misplaced, displaced, or somehow cocooned inside a mind-space that did not belong to me. Clearly I was the innocent victim of brainpower that had little or nothing to do with me. This brainpower had willed me to perform acts that the mundane or rational me would never contemplate. But here is the truly weird thing about it all. For the entire match I had this constant ring inside my head that signalled to me that I was playing this game from the vantage point of somehow being outside myself.
My verbal response to the constant ringing sound inside my head, according to my team mates on the field, was to keep yelling "can someone please answer the bloody phone?"
Richard.
