Blanks...

Updated: Aug 3, 2021

The blanks in our lives are important.

Blanks are what we sweep under the carpet not what we put on full display [see photo].

The truth is our lives are full of blanks and these episodes, or events, often result in lasting memories. Remember the time you got all excited about a date. You were anxious, fidgety, clumsy, tongue tied, and generally ill-at-ease. The whole thing drew a blank. Perhaps it was always going to lead you nowhere but you blame yourself for this poor outcome. Of course it may not have been you but the other person who was firing blanks. You can never know for sure where the blanks emanate from but you can change the impact they have upon you.

Whenever you fire a blank in life your most likely response is to reload and fire again. The natural result is a series of blanks being fired at a target with no outward signs of success or damage. But there is hidden damage if you become frustrated, angry, impetuous, and even crestfallen as you continue to seek success through such imperfect means.

When you hire a blank onto your team the ramifications can be surprising. First it takes some time for you to admit, to yourself, that you actually hired a blank. Your instant remedy is to fill the blank with training, job orientation, special favours, and lax standards that are not equally shared with other team members. If you persist with your efforts to power-up your blank then team members will begin to leave or simply down tools. Team mates may become blanks due to learnt slackness as the entire team loses cohesion, efficiency, and effectiveness.

The moment you come to believe your life, or you, are a blank you crater into depression. Your vital essence, or sense of well being, becomes a blank that is framed by a life that has little purpose and which others will try to fill with meaning. You may find a way out of this chasm of blankness while under the influence of prescription drugs or through the creation of new narratives for a life that remains racked with self doubt, remorse, and emptiness.
