Be happy, be 105 years old...

"Never take up smoking and just keep breathing".

Phil Corio spoke, as a 105 years old, about his life. He spoke about marrying the right person. He spoke about his love for his wife, sons, and grandchildren. His spoke about his childhood friend Frank Sinatra who he grew up with and whose first wife was the sister of his best friend. His advice [the wisdom of his mob] to Frankie was to get a job and boost his income to rival the pay packets he and his friends enjoyed. None of these kids were fans of Frankie the singer. But they all quickly dropped off Frankie when he betrayed them by ditching his first wife [the girl from the hood] in favour of Ava Gardner.

At age 105 Phil loves to produce his homemade pasta. He loves to make small wooden items like chopping boards, napkin holders, etc. throughout his life he always worked with his hands even when he drove a paint delivery truck around New York and Jersey. Phil lived a life that is [perhaps] no longer possible.

However Phil Corio will always be centre stage in my mind because he offers the best advice I have ever heard for anyone planning to be happy and live to be105 years old.

Phil says.... "Never take up smoking and just keep breathing". With just 8 words Phil articulates the essence of minimalism.

"Never take up smoking" he says. With just 4 simple words he urges each of us not bow to peer pressures or to place collective wants above individual needs. He implies that collective wants can easily morph into individual habits. And. He signals the potential impact of some collective beliefs [like smoking will not kill you] because these can feedback into personal wants and habits.

"Just keep breathing" is a startling 3 word message Phil uses to describe what an individual needs to survive.

Phil Corio eloquently warns us that there may be some "unintended consequences of smoking" as he implores each of us to embrace "the pure joy of breathing".

Minimalism is a "state of mind" that refuses to burden a life with unnecessary pain, harm, and misery while we rejoice in the fact that we are still need to breath.

Advertisement... I have set-up a free access incubator for you and your friends where you can play with your most diverse, demanding, and sticky ideas. While inside this incubator with a select few friends [I recommend no more than eight] you can create an ideology, confirmation bias, and 'group think' free space. As I say this facility is free for you and your friends. Use it as a start-up space before you go onto create your own physical or online venue. To access this space go to minimal-you.com and click on the button below the heading "the hangout" and then you can get to work curating ideas in ways that make them a social or commercial reality. And. If you have any questions about setting-up your De Bono type incubator feel free to contact me via email or direct messaging [see "ask Richard"].
