Are you an attention seeking peacock?

You are a pretty boy [see photo].

Many of you preen like a peacock to fill your want to be noticed, talked about, admired by the mob, attract a mate, and generally to look special. The tricks you deploy to achieve your desired wants can be amazing: yet, the results pale in comparison with a true peacock.

Why is my peacock never as good as yours? First and foremost your peacock is probably preening to a much larger mob on Facebook, Twitter, TIkTok, and LinkedIn than mine. You may have thousands of eyeballs admiring you while I have less than 100 [Facebook], none [Twitter], none {TikTok], and less than 200 [LinkedIn] respectively. Your peacock is an attention seeker and many of you have a rare talent for attracting many many eyeballs. Most of you attention grabbers are peacocks to be admired as much, if not more, than the big bird in this photo. And I truly do admire you much more than him.

Unlike the peacock in the photo who has one act of preening you have to change your act over time. You have to go where the mob is watching. You must create a new show just to get their attention. You must ensure that your show is better than the competition if you are to sustain their attention. Then poof they are all gone. The attention caravan has moved on. And you are left scrambling to catch up with it. But. You love being a peacock and you are extremely good at being one so you work 24/7 just to stay in the game.

One day you will wake up and all your peacock feathers are left lying the ground around you. You look in the mirror and there is no great show of plumage. You have been stripped bare of your want to be the centre of attention. Today you must face your essential needs. This happens quickly. The triggers for awakening can be many or varied but they all result in the same outcome. On this day of reckoning you have come to value your individual needs [health, happiness, family, independence, etc] above their collective wants [power, status, dominance, moral virtue, etc].

The day you wake to see your individual needs not their collective wants starring back at you will be a severely depressing time for you personally. And yet it may well be the most liberating moment you will ever have in all your years on this planet.
