Newminimalism is grounded in the principles of "change of use".
This is my second riff on "Managing to survive" which is a collection of ideas about possible futures. Today I intend to explore the changing nature of the Internet. This new Internet will become the infrastructure for a world of local networks that serve their population.
In the emerging post-2020 economy the Internet will be subjected to massive changes. The straight-line predictions about the Internet of Things, driverless cars, cashless societies, etc may all be on course to be an integral part of what is coming; but, the commentary about the pace of change for propelling us to towards these outcomes may prove to be hopelessly wrong. The pace of change for some will be faster, or slower, but also some will never occur.
What I expect to become a driving force of future change is what we may loosely refer to as the new Internet. And so. What is likely to produce this new Internet? That is simple. It is the "change of use" of the existing Internet. Somewhat surprisingly perhaps we can already see this "change of use" in action as people all around the world work from home, engage in webinars, produce media content online [using ZOOM or other technologies], etc.
There is a massive "change of use" of the Internet during this unprecedented shutdown of the world, national, and local economic activities. Being online in many cases today means that you are "going live". You are live in a one-to-one, or a one-to-many, transformation of ideas, conversations, content, instruction, etc. Thus the applications you use are different to those you used in 2019. If you are a business owner you are preparing to invest more and more capital funds into the systems you have or need to better connect you to this new Internet. In effect you are preparing to establish a set of systems that enable you to initiate, or to facilitate, live demand for networked services.
In the latter half of 2020 you can expect to see a host of inventions, or innovations, that replaces labour with Internet-based facilities. Local networks will flourish for a wide array of services in food catering, outdoor and indoor entertainment, virtual workspaces, booking services for trades, etc. The local services available to you will depend where you live. Not because of the location but the demographic mix of the population. If you live with young singles [most of who will live in cities of the future] your local network of services will be very different to localities where middle age or older families reside. This new Internet is likely to become a connected series of localised networks that serve the immediate needs and wants of individuals and groups.
The future will be grounded in who you live with not where you live. However where you live will be influenced, perhaps irreversibly, by who you need to have in your local network. So your future will become an inversion, in terms your life on the Internet, of what it was in 2019.
Richard.
Managing to survive will be a complex challenge that is different for people who live in families or alone, who are young or old, who are in full employment or working gigs, etc. Engage me in conversation about your ideas by going to minimal-you.com and sending me a message on chat or email.
