Newminimalists are prepared for the coming dystopian winter.
We have been warned time and time again that a dystopian winter is coming [Brave New World, Nineteen Eighty Four, Fahrenheit 451, etc]. In 2020 we have become trapped in a pre-dystopian world [see photo] that has railed us into hard times.
The common feature in the books [listed above] about a coming dystopian winter is the demise of the individual. Today the individual is fighting to survive the influence of collectives, ideologies, cancel culture, and group think. What we should have learnt from Aldous Huxley in 1932, George Orwell in 1949, and Ray Bradbury in 1953 is that once the collective assumes ultimate control over the individual then life on Earth sinks into some form of dystopia. The great irony is that most humans who form the collectives that produce a dystopian world began with a genuine ambition to create a utopian future. The reasons for this unintended outcome are complex: but, in general, those who aim to produce a society based on the first principles of "equality" are likely to set us on a pathway to a dystopia.
The core notion is that equality is a good thing. Equal opportunity for individuals has been the driving force in Western Society for the past 70 years. For all that time there has been an aggressive rival notion of equal outcomes for groups or collectives. By 2019 the idea that an individual should be provided with an equal opportunity in life has been totally supplanted by the notion that groups are entitled to expect equal outcomes in their lives. In 2020 the notion of equal outcomes is being challenged by the concept that all individuals belong to collectives at the time of birth and that birthright membership produces unequal outcomes.
Unequal outcomes that are entrenched by governments is what signals the approach of a dystopian winter. These unequal outcomes are accelerating due to the contemporary implementation of intolerance towards individuals who display any character traits that hint at independent thinking, actions, and beliefs.
I trust that the fact I am a Newminimalist [my invention for a modern state of mind] will protect me from the worst impacts of post-2020 hard times. Clearly, no amount of new technology, innovations, social mores, etc will change the fact that unless, or until, the power of collectives and group think is "equalised" by a boost to the power of the individual then a dystopian future is assured for all of us [including me]. Of course, those with an ideological, or theological, bias towards humanity being ruled by collectives we can expect to welcome the coming dystopian winter [especially those who promote a "cancel culture" agenda].
Meanwhile, I will put on my blizzard-proof garments and boots as I brace myself for the hard times that are coming our way.
Richard.
